Research

In order to make a more effective plastic waste management system we had to conduct research to figure out the ideal way to organise and manage plastic.

of plastic waste generated globally is not recycled.

Case Studies

Singapore

Asia’s cleanest city-state processes 99% of its waste with a 60% recycling rate, using waste-to-energy plants and no mainland landfills. Strict segregation laws, public awareness campaigns, and plastic bag charges support its efficient circular economy.

Germany

Europe’s recycling champion achieves a 67% recycling rate, with 99% of PET bottles returned through its Pfand deposit system. Policies like the Green Dot and Extended Producer Responsibility hold producers accountable, while a dual waste system and strong infrastructure with over 15,000 recycling centers ensure highly efficient waste management.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE generates over 22 million tonnes of waste annually and aims to divert 75% from landfills. Large-scale waste-to-energy projects, strong government policies, and partnerships with companies like Bee’ah and Masdar are driving a shift toward a more sustainable, zero-landfill future.

Rwanda

Rwanda is a leader in sustainability, with a nationwide plastic bag ban since 2008 and strong waste laws. Around 85–90% of waste is collected in urban areas, supported by strict enforcement and monthly community clean-ups (Umuganda). Kigali is often ranked among the cleanest cities in Africa due to public participation and government control. Recycling is still developing, but waste segregation and environmental awareness are steadily increasing.

Uruguay

Uruguay is advancing sustainable waste management through a national circular economy strategy and improved recycling systems. Strong government policies, expanding waste collection coverage, and investments in sorting and recovery facilities are helping reduce landfill use and increase recycling rates nationwide.

India

India generates around 4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with only about a 9% recycling rate. Around 60% of waste remains uncollected, while 43% is still single-use plastic. Despite a 2022 ban on single-use plastics, enforcement varies, and limited segregation at source remains a major issue. The informal sector handles nearly 90% of recycling, even as rapid urbanization outpaces waste infrastructure.

Suggestions for India's Plastic Managment System

Implement Deposit-Return Systems

Adopt Germany's Pfand model for PET bottles. Start with major cities, offer ₹5-10 deposit per bottle. Partner with existing kabadiwala networks for collection.
